Ways to Make Money Online: Website Usability Testers

Web usability testers make legit money online simply by visiting websites and saying what they’re thinking.  Every website that’s created should really be tested by real users, to see if it works, or if the user gets confused by it or it just doesn’t operate properly.

While many websites are published daily without testing, an increasing number of web companies are using the services of ordinary people to test their websites before they go live.

Web Usability Testing

You can become a web usability tester by either directly registering for jobs with the web companies, or by working as a freelance website usability tester. Every website to be tested will have different criteria you’re looking for, but it’s not usually technical issues you’re looking for, but simple stuff like: did it load? can you easily find where to go? can you complete a dummy purchase in the shop or did you get lost trying? These are important questions that need answering before a website is launched into the world … for high profile sites this can be the difference between cornering the market or being a laughing stock.

Increasingly, web usability testers are required to ‘record’ their actions and even speak out loud what their thoughts are, but there are others where you simply have to check a list of criteria.

Just the other week I placed a home delivery order for some milk and bread online, I was newly registered, I’m PC and Internet literate, yet I sat all morning waiting for that bread and milk to arrive … before I phoned and they asked if I’d pressed a button on the screen…. I couldn’t remember, but I had set the order up, given them all my payment terms, I’d picked my monthly payment date… I’d done the lot – except press the tiny CONFIRM button that made it happen. If I failed to press it, how many less Internet savvy people would also have not spotted the error? Usability testing helps flush out these oversights and user errors before a site goes live.

Website Usability Testers Wanted

Below are some companies who use web usability testers either occasionally or on an ongoing basis:

  1. What Users Do pay up to £8/$8/€8 per test, most tests take under 20 minutes. Website usability testers are emailed when a new test is available. You then log in and you will be shown the task for that test, for example “Look for a holiday” or “Find a local plumber”. Your microphone is then tested and they record your spoken thoughts and screen movements as you complete the test. If you’re only going to join ONE website tester jobs site, then this is a good one.
  2. What Users Do. Website tester jobs – each test is paid differently, but clearly shown in the list before you start it. They take a varying amount of time, from 10-30 minutes. Whatusersdo pay you through Paypal.
  3. Try My UI. Try My UI pay $10 per test, which should take just 15-20 minutes. A web usability test with Try My UI usually consists of a video of your computer screen (screencast) as you use a target website. The video features your voice as you describe in detail your impressions and thoughts as you use the website and perform the requested tasks. Your written summary, responding to several questions about your experience using the website.
  4. User Testing. User Testing pay $10 per test, which should take you about 10-20 minutes. You must be at least 18 years old. With User Testing you use their online screen recorder to record a video of what’s happening on your screen – mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes – and your spoken comments while you use the website you’re testing. You then answer four questions in writing about your experience.
  5. Userlytics. Userlytics pay $10 per test, which should take just 10-20 minutes. You will need a microphone and webcam for your report.

So that’s it – website usability testers are making great money – and so can you! This is a legitimate work at home way to make money online. Do the work when you’re available, get paid by Paypal in most cases.
