List of Writing Sites – Getting Paid for Stories, Poems, Articles and More

Work From Home Writing Gigs
If you are a competent writer, then there are plenty of good websites out there where you can get paid for your writing. Sites vary in what type of articles, stories and other content they will accept.

These sites are all free to join – but you need to make sure that the site is at the right level for your writing skills and abilities. You also need to commit to producing content and writing on an on-going basis, because working as a writer is most often a long-term gain. Put the effort in, consistently – and you’ll reach a tipping point when your writing suddenly turns from an occasional little extra into a sustainable, reliable and growing income.

You Cannot Write For Every Site

It’s simply not feasible to write for every site. Each site will have different joining criteria – and they will seek different material. But, you do need to join the writing sites that appeal to you most, then trial them all to discover the ones that you feel most comfortable with and the ones that produce the best income for you.

Some sites will pay you per article, some will pay you on a revenue sharing basis, based on the revenue they make from advertising they place around your writing. Which will be the most lucrative for YOU is something only you can discover, by committing to being a regular contributor and taking your writing seriously!

List of the Best Writing Sites

Here are some of the best writing sites, to get you started. They pay, they are honest and legit, if you’re serious then you want a reputable company to join. Don’t work with fly-by-nights:

  • Hubpages. To join Hubpages, you simply have to have a desire to write, to make money and to produce high quality work. Although Hubpages is open to anybody – most professional writers have an account with them as they are one of the best writing sites on the Internet. Catering to a worldwide audience, Hubpages’ writers come from many countries and write about every subject under the sun.
NEW: Hubpages now has a new Recipe format – probably the quickest and easiest way for you to make money from sharing your family recipes with the world!
There are many ways to earn money writing on Hubpages, while it’s primarily based on a revenue sharing concept, there is nothing to stop you writing articles for businesses and charging them for that privilege – so long as you keep to the simple Hubpages rules regarding the number of outbound links (2) to any one domain and whether it is in any other way over-promotional. In this way you can be paid for writing articles for businesses -and- still keep the additional ongoing residual income from the revenue sharing side of things. Your earnings from Hubpages can come from combinations of: a revenue share of Google Adsense ads, Amazon ads as well as the Hubpages’ in-house program. You can also add links to your articles, going out to affiliate products you promote (except a few sites like Clickbank), or links to your own websites, or even charge businesses to write articles for them with links back to their websites.  If you plan to do this, check the current rules as I’ve known the rules to be tightened up over the many years I’ve been with Hubpages.
You can refer friends to Hubpages – I often promote my friends’ writing alongside my own, which helps them get started, we find this a great way to help each other to spread the word!
  • Wizzley.  This works similarly to Hubpages. You need to be able to produce well written articles that an aspiring professional writer would be proud of.  This is not a site for spammers or poor English.  Wizzley pays similarly to Hubpages, with the addition of being able to promote Zazzle products alongside your writing, if appropriate.  This makes it popular with Zazzle producers to produce high quality writing that sells their products, without “selling” (aka spamming) or being “light on content”.
  • Niume.  This works as a shared blogging space – you write about anything you like and get to mix with other people interested in the same subjects.  Get paid for views and likes – highly recommended as the “next big thing”.  Ideal for beginners, who can learn the craft of writing online by getting advice from other writers and/or reading relevant articles – as well as seasoned writers who need a new stage for their talent!  This is a site that actively helps you to promote your work and get seen.
  • Word Gigs: You must be a US resident to join Word Gigs – so I’ve not joined them. They cater for serious or professional writers who are hungry for STEADY writing assignments. With Word Gigs you can write items with varying lengths, from what they call blurbs of 100 words, or mini posts of 200 words, through to articles of 350-400 words.Payment at Word Gigs is monthly, via Paypal. Word Gigs pay a fixed amount per item you produce, which at the time of writing is $.75 USD for each completed blog post/blurb, $2.00 USD for each completed mini-post, and $4.00 USD for each completed article. Until you’ve earnt a certain amount ($300) you have to accept the work they assign to you – once you’ve passed this income point you can pick and choose the writing jobs you want to do.  They tell you on their website, under “About Us” exactly how much they pay.

Note: While the above is a legit and reputable list of writing sites, terms and conditions can change on sites and so the information given above might change over time. Reasons for this in the past have been changes to Google and Amazon terms, changes in laws and writing sites wanting to keep the quality of their site content high.

Freelance Writing

If you’re the sort of writer who wants to dip in and out and generate freelance writing income on an ad hoc basis, then freelance writing jobs might be more your thing. Probably the best freelance writing website is Freelancer, a worldwide and massively popular site for all types of freelance jobs, but there are hundreds of writing jobs on here.

There are many different types of writing jobs on this site, including:

  • Academic Writing Jobs
  • Article Rewriting Jobs
  • Book Writing Jobs
  • Copywriting Jobs
  • Ghostwriting Jobs
  • Grant Writing Jobs
  • Medical Writing Jobs
  • Report Writing Jobs
  • Screen Writing Jobs
  • Travel Writing Jobs
  • … and more

With freelance work you traditionally bid for the work, competing against others – and it’s not the cheapest bid that wins. There’s now a new option, with some jobs, to be able to put in a bid on a “per hour” basis – meaning you are setting your hourly rate for the work and not just the whole job price. This can take the surprise out of some types of work, which might be difficult to estimate the time for.

New jobs in all categories are added all the time. It is up to the person who is advertising the writing job to specify which category it falls into, so it is worthwhile looking around at a few job categories.
