Mystery shopping is not a new industry. It pre-dates the Internet. Businesses have always used mystery shopping companies to provide mystery shoppers to provide impartial feedback on their premises, service and staff.

These days, the only thing that has changed in the industry is the technology used. The Internet is the perfect way for mystery shopping companies to recruit mystery shoppers, to list mystery shopping jobs that need to be completed and to receive the reports back. Mystery Shopping Companies A-C

Twenty years ago, if you were a mystery shopper, you’d have received a telephone call from the mystery shopping company. Once you’d accepted an assignment they’d then have to print off a pack containing the report and your forms – and send it to you. You’d then do the mystery shopping and hand write the forms, before bundling it all up and posting it off to them again. At their end, they’d receive your report and put it in a pile with the other 50-100. Then they’d have to compile all those reports into one large report for their client, with statistics (worked out by hand)…. and they’d then print and post off that report.

The Internet has transformed mystery shopping – now assignments are emailed or listed on a website; many companies allow you to “self assign” mystery shopping jobs, so you literally pick the jobs you want to do from the website. Most feedback reports are done online too, with simple tick boxes and spaces for a text response.
